Reminder to California Employers: Some Local Minimum Wage Rates Increase on July 1, 2023

By Jaimie Graczyk posted 06-02-2023 09:38 AM

While California’s state minimum wage rate increases on January 1 of each year, California employers need to be mindful of local minimum wage rate increases starting July 1.

If an employer has a California employee working within the boundaries of a city that has a minimum wage ordinance that is higher than that of the state minimum wage, which is $15.50 for 2023, the employer must ensure that it is complying with the local ordinance that has a higher minimum wage rate.

The following cities within California will increase their minimum wage rates starting July 1:

  • Alameda

  • Berkeley

  • Emeryville

  • Fremont

  • City of Long Beach (hotel workers)

  • City of Long Beach (concessionaire workers at the Long Beach Airport and the Long Beach Convention Center)

  • City of Los Angeles

  • County of Los Angeles (unincorporated areas)

  • Malibu

  • Milpitas

  • Pasadena

  • San Francisco

  • Santa Monica

  • West Hollywood

  • West Hollywood (hotel workers)

For more detailed information on the minimum wage increases, members can access Employers Council’s CA Municipal Minimum Wage and Paid Sick Leave whitepaper on our website. The California Legal Services team regularly updates this resource, as well as many of our other California resources, to keep up with changes.

Employers should obtain the updated minimum wage poster for each locality they have employees working with a local minimum wage ordinance in effect. Employers who have any questions about the local minimum wage rate increases on July 1, or any other California wage and hour questions, can contact our California Legal Services team at CAinfo@employerscouncil.org.
