Employers Council recently published the 2022 HR Metrics Survey. This survey contains information on 2021 turnover, workforce planning, training & development, HR operations, and cost of benefits. There was a total of 334 participating organizations from the following states:

What was the impact of the Great Resignation on 2021 turnover rates? Results from the survey show an increase in the 2021 All-Employee turnover rate for each of the four states. Arizona had the highest increase in 2021 turnover at 34.9% vs. 19.9% in 2020. Information is broken out by geographic location and industry in the final report. These data are also displayed by Non-Exempt, Exempt, and All Employees for each demographic. The following chart shows the All-Employee data line for turnover for 2021 and 2020.

Participants were asked about employees who left voluntarily (employee initiated) and the reasons given for their decision of separation from the organization. According to the survey, the top three reasons employees leave their job are:

Career change as a reason for turnover was new to the list last year of the top three reasons given and continued to be part of the top three, which is tied with compensation as a reason in Arizona, Colorado, and Utah. Employers can take steps to reduce the turnover rate of employees taking new jobs by reviewing their applicant screening process, orientation process, and pay and benefits to see if changes to those policies might keep employees from leaving the organization for another position.

In addition to asking employers about separation rates, we also asked about the average length of service of their separated employees. The following chart shows the average length of service in months for non-exempt and exempt employees who voluntarily left the organization in 2021.

In addition to separations, the HR Metrics Survey also has useful information in relation to current employees. This next chart shows the average tenure of current employees in the organization. These data are displayed by geographic location and exempt and non-exempt employees. As shown in the chart, Utah has the highest overall tenure for all employees at an average of 8.4 years.
