Talent acquisition is the lifeblood of virtually every organization. Getting the right people in the right roles is paramount to maintaining a productive, thriving workplace.
But as most human resources professionals can tell you, the only thing more important than obtaining the right talent is keeping that talent. Employee engagement and retention have moved to the forefront of human capital strategy, and smart organizations are discovering the important elements that factor into holding on to their high achievers.
According to research by Quantum Workplace, building trusting relationships between management and staff is a primary driver for employee engagement and retention. The more an employee believes that senior leadership is devoted to an environment where workers feel valued and appreciated, the more that employee is likely to be a significant contributor and stay with the organization longer.
How can a public or private entity make this happen? Effective communication is a key piece of this strategy. Regular, open, two-way communication, where employees feel truly heard by those in charge greatly enhances an employee’s sense of belonging, increasing their commitment to their employer.
But it goes beyond communication. It’s important that employers also live the values they promote in their communication, not just saying the right things but also showing them in their deeds and actions. It’s embodied by the old expression, “If you’re going to talk the talk, then walk the walk.”
The combination of the concepts mentioned above will go a long way toward ensuring that the top-flight talent you’ve worked so hard to bring on board will stay with the ship, both through turbulent seas and calm waters.
Other important factors to consider include helping employees understand how what they do has a positive impact on the organization, creating an employee-friendly culture, and building and maintaining a healthy employer brand that lets staff, customers, and the business world know that you are an employer of choice.
