Retention = Supervision

If you read this article in the New York Times, you know that employees quit their jobs when they don’t like their boss. This is nothing new; for years, we have known that employees stay or leave organizations because of the supervision they receive. It is more pronounced now with the great resignation as employees see the many job opportunities and know that the grass might, in fact, be greener on the other side when a boss is behaving badly.

It is now even more relevant to create a culture of good supervision. Different methods prove successful, and all prioritize trust and respect. A well-known theory of leadership is servant leadership. The leader views their role to empower employees to meet the organization's needs and provide the support they need. This is fully explained in many publications, and here is a comprehensive article. The leader as a coach is also a concept that has gained ground. It requires supervisors to help employees be all they can be and is well-illustrated in the TV Show Ted Lasso. As with servant leadership, it requires time, energy, and focus

When an employer decides to implement a new leadership model in the organization, there should be a clear understanding that this will not happen overnight and that all leaders and supervisors may not remain at the workplace. The first step, of course, is executive leadership buy-in. This must be present. There are many articles on the topic, which may be a good place to start to learn and see examples of how this is done. It might also be helpful to get help with this significant task, and Employers Council is here to help with conversations and more in-depth resources. Leadership that brings out the best in employees has been proven repeatedly to impact the bottom line. We all work better when we are trusted to do our best. If you want to retain the best employees, give them the best managers and supervisors who know how to give employees the tools they need to succeed and allow them room to do their best.
