Editor’s note: Employers Council offers members access to a library of books. This article is part of an ongoing series to introduce members to the collection.

Ever since the transition to remote work prompted by the COVID-19 pandemic, members have asked us for guidance to achieve success with remote and hybrid employees. When I came across the book Remote Not Distant – Design a Company Culture That Will Help You Thrive in a Hybrid Workplace, I added it to our library collection in hopes it would offer helpful insights.

I read Remote Not Distant and was not disappointed. Published in 2022 and written during the pandemic, there are some minor outdated references. Despite this, the book offers relevant insights for HR professionals and organizational leaders to contemplate new strategies to create a successful workplace in the post-pandemic economy.

To my surprise, author Gustavo Razzetti explores a wider array of workplace topics beyond remote and hybrid work. His perspectives on leadership, culture, and emerging workforce demands are relevant no matter how many remote or hybrid employees an employer may have.

Razzetti, an organizational consultant, leverages numerous specific examples from a variety of companies, including some he has worked with, to illustrate his perspective. His straightforward writing style is accessible and to the point. In the notes pages, he provides citations to validate his writing, offering opportunities to delve deeper.

Remote Not Distant is an easy read, structured into five stages of organizational development, parsing out the content into actionable chunks. Each chapter offers helpful recaps to summarize the book’s many ideas. Exercises are included for the reader to facilitate conversations among team members to stimulate action in the workplace. QRs offer downloadable sample tools to adapt and use; others point to the author’s website with access to articles and videos.

A few quibbles. The editorial review missed many mistakes, so the reader must sometimes re-read a sentence, add in or reverse words, to understand the author’s intent. Some transitions are awkward and abrupt, missing helpful words to move the reader forward. Aside from these shortcomings, I found Remote Not Distant to be thought provoking with useful guidance to put the book’s concepts into action.

Has your workplace changed since the pandemic? Are you open to new ideas to manage an increasingly complex workforce? If so, this book offers perspectives that may prove useful.
