We are nearly a month into 2024, and the new year has brought challenges for human resources professionals. To help our members manage those challenges, here is a list of HR action items, along with helpful resources.

  • Review policies to ensure they comply with new federal and state laws, many described in this article. Use the CCH Multistate tool to review laws in other states. Access all of our sample policies (and complete handbooks) here.

  • Check your employment law posters in all locations for all employees (in-person and virtual). Our Poster Service can help.

  • Revise recordkeeping processes for federal and state pregnancy laws to document requests; consult this new checklist

  • In Colorado, all employers must retain accurate records of employee complaints about workplace harassment, as described here.

  • Self-check HR processes to verify your organization is on track. Use our dozens of checklists – like the HR Internal Controls checklist.

  • Watch for important compliance deadlines. The 2024 HR Planning Calendar provides you with many federal compliance timelines.

  • Prepare your organization for the use of artificial intelligence (AI). Use our guide to get started.

  • Pursue professional development and develop your teams' skills, including current and up-and-coming leaders. Browse ourtraining catalog for classes that can help.

  • Maximize the value of your membership. Register for our free members-only classes. You can browse them here.

  • Expand your professional network. Use the Community platformto network with other professionals from Employers Council member organizations – be sure to update yourprofile.

  • Alert your managers and supervisors to existing/emerging compliance issues; distribute our updated 2024 Quick Facts.

  • Nurture a workplace culture that values employees, supports their well-being, and fosters a higher level of voluntary effort. Check out our guides on workplace mental health and workplace culture to get started.

  • Enhance remote worker success and your organization's ability to attract applicants who demand worksite flexibility. Our guide can help.

  • Purge old records. They take up space and may increase exposure to unexpected risks from audits and investigations. Consult this updated guide to identify those documents that may have passed their retention period.

  • Lead your organization through disruption and toward higher levels of effectiveness. Consult with our team to discuss your goals.
