While California’s state minimum wage rate increases on January 1 of each year, California employers need to be mindful of local minimum wage rate increases starting July 1.
If an employer has a California employee working within the boundaries of a city that has a minimum wage ordinance that is higher than that of the state minimum wage, which is $15.50 for 2023, the employer must ensure that it is complying with the local ordinance that has a higher minimum wage rate.
