Does Your Health Insurance Plan Have Parity?

By Employers Council Staff posted 02-04-2022 10:28 AM

The US Department of Labor (DOL) issued a report to Congress on January 25, 2022, which shows failures of health insurance plans to deliver parity in mental health and substance-use disorder benefits.

As it said in the press release, the report has information suggesting health plans and health insurance issuers are failing to deliver parity for mental health and substance-use disorder benefits to those they cover. As a result, the DOL is placing greater emphasis on enforcement in addition to guidance to have complied parity.

Parity means the payment amounts and authorization requirements required by a group health plan for mental health or substance-use disorder benefits are not more restrictive than the payment amounts and treatment limitations that apply to substantially all medical and surgical benefits.

Employers should feel free to contact their broker to see if the plan they are using is compliant with this law.
